Michael Garvey

Senior Philanthropy Associate

Michael is a creative leader with over 25 years of experience running a range of music and arts organisations in England and Wales. He has a deep knowledge of the performing arts and music education sectors and has also worked for record labels, music festivals, radio stations and at the BBC where he ran the national orchestra and chorus of Wales for six years. Alongside broadcast media (particularly radio and digital) and charity management, Michael has worked in the public funding sector as a relationship manager.

As a consultant and qualified executive coach, Michael has delivered important interim leadership roles utilising his strong change management expertise and ability to bring teams and individuals together around a common purpose. Recent consultancy work has seen him support The Benedetti Foundation, the Bath Festival Orchestra, English Touring Opera, Aurora Orchestra, The Glasshouse, Radio 3 and the BBC’s review of its classical portfolio.

Michael’s work with New Philanthropy for Arts & Culture has been instrumental in researching models that create the right environment for philanthropy growth and supporting and training fledgling networks to become self-sustaining.

Michael is a founding member of the Cardiff Music Board and chairs his local amateur choir – where he is a passionate, and sometimes an overly-loud, member of the tenor section!
